How do you prescribe Monofer?
Monofer may be administered as an intravenous bolus injection up to 500 mg up to three times a week at an administration rate of up to 250 mg iron/minute. It may be administered undiluted or diluted in maximum 20 ml sterile 0.9% sodium chloride.
How do you dilute a Monofer?
Monofer should be infused undiluted or diluted in sterile 0.9% sodium chloride. For stability reasons, Monofer should not be diluted to concentrations less than 1 mg iron/ml (not including the volume of the ferric derisomaltose solution) and never diluted in more than 500 ml.
How long does Monofer infusion take?
An IV iron infusion can take around 30 minutes to one hour to complete depending on the amount of IV iron administered. IV iron is given by qualified staff and you will be monitored whilst it is given and for at least 30 minutes after it has been discontinued.

Do I have any after effects? Some people feel a little tired and the urine will be a darker colour as approx 5% of the iron is excreted through the kidneys the day after the infusion. The infusion does not affect you being able to drive home.

What are the precautions to be taken when using Monofer?
Careful monitoring of iron status is recommended to avoid iron overload. Parenteral iron should be used with caution in case of acute or chronic infection. Monofer should not be used in patients with ongoing bacteraemia. Hypotensive episodes may occur if intravenous injection is administered too rapidly.
